Microplane began its business by manufacturing rasps for carpenters and woodworkers. However, in 1994, a Canadian homemaker was preparing an orange cake. Frustrated with her traditional grater, she grabbed her husband's wood rasp instead and discovered that it was the perfect grating tool.

All Microplane graters are designed for professional use and feature numerous small, razor-sharp edges that are etched rather than stamped like traditional graters. This process makes the blade incredibly sharp, allowing it to make fine cuts through food rather than tearing or shredding it—a design patented by Microplane.
