Medium grit whetstones are used for regular sharpening. About 600-2000 grit is popularly refered to as medium grit stones. This type of stone is used the form the edge and create burr. It leaves a sharp edge, but the edge needs to be polished on a finer grit stone before becoming screaming sharp.
