Umajiyama is mined near the Ohira mine in Kyoto. The stones are medium-hard, about 3/5, which makes them easy to work with and forgiving, even for those without much experience with natural stones. They work quickly and easily build up their own slurry, making sharpening both efficient and intuitive.

The kasumi that Umajiyama provides can be described as softly misty, a soft, hazy kasumi rather than strong and scratchy contrasts that harder stones often give. The stone is suitable both as a final finish or as a step before finer polishing. The edge gets a nice balance between high polish and good bite. We recommend it!
