Umajiyama is quarried near the Ohira mine in Kyoto. The stones are medium-hard, around 3/5, which makes them easy to work with and forgiving, even for those without extensive experience with natural stones. They work quickly and easily build their own slurry, making sharpening both efficient and intuitive.

The kasumi that Umajiyama produces can be described as softly hazy, a gentle and soft kasumi rather than the strong and scratchy contrasts that harder stones often give. The stone is suitable both as a final finish or as a step before finer polishing. The edge achieves a good balance between high polish and good bite. We recommend it!
