A coarse sharpening stone with a #320 grit. The stone leaves a rough finish that needs polishing to achieve an impressive sharpness. The 320-grit stone is a good foundation stone for sharpening knives that are in great need of material removal, or for repairing nicks in the edge. After this waterstone, you proceed to a medium-fine stone, and possibly also a polishing stone.
